Treatment Information

Doxycycline

Doxycycline is a prescription oral antibiotic commonly used for the prevention of malaria in travellers visiting areas where the disease is prevalent. It is a tetracycline-class antibiotic that works by inhibiting the growth of malaria parasites in the bloodstream. Doxycycline is suitable for adults and children over 12 years of age and is taken as a daily tablet starting before travel, throughout the stay in the malaria area, and for four weeks after leaving. Its effectiveness, once-daily dosing, and affordability make it a widely chosen option for malaria prophylaxis, especially in regions where other medications may not be suitable. Medical supervision is important to ensure correct use and minimise side effects.

How It Works

Doxycycline prevents malaria by interfering with the ability of malaria parasites (Plasmodium species) to multiply inside red blood cells, effectively stopping the infection before it can develop.

Why Choose Doxycycline

Doxycycline offers reliable malaria prevention for most travellers and is particularly useful in areas with chloroquine or mefloquine resistance. Its once-daily dosing is convenient for travel routines, and it is often less expensive than alternative prophylactics. The medicine is also effective against other infections, which can be an advantage in some travel situations.

Important Note

Doxycycline must be taken consistently, starting before travel, during the stay, and for four weeks after leaving the malaria area. Missing doses can reduce its effectiveness. It is not suitable for pregnant women, children under 12, or individuals with certain allergies or liver or kidney problems. Protect skin from sunlight due to increased sensitivity while taking Doxycycline.
